The 8th International Conference on Aromatic and Medicinal Plants (CIPAM 8) was hold from September 29th till October 4th, 2014 in Guadeloupe around the thema ” Innovations and traditions in the heart of Caribbean biodiversity”.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During 6 days, scientists, economic and institutional actors presented their works and exchanged around 5 themes, allowing to approach the development of the tropical and Caribbean plants under various aspects:
\n<\/span>– biodiversity;
\n– traditional knowledges;
\n– innovatives techniques and the active ingredients;
\n– economic issues;
\n– legislation on products with aromatic and medicinal plants.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A day was dedicated to dye plants and natural fibers. Numerous dye plants grow naturally on the Guadeloupe islands (indigos, logwood, bixa, noni, almond tree).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The culture of indigo is one of the first that was introduced by the European colonists into the New World.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This preindustry, the production of which was intended for Europe workshops, developped in the whole of the Caribbean in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century and played a significant economic role. Vestiges of indigo farms are still visible. The indigo anil (Indigofera suffruticosa<\/em> Mill.) and the frank indigo (Indigofera tinctoria<\/em> L.) are two common species of indigo in the archipelago. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Patrick BRENAC was invited to present a conference on the theme: ” the constraints bound to the quality of tinctoriales raw materials “.<\/span><\/span> <\/span>It also was the opportunity to announce the creation, quite recent, of the company GREEN<\/span>‘ING.
\nThis session also included conferences of Dominique CARDON (History of tinctoriales plants: place of Guadeloupe), Tristan YVON (History of Marie Galante’s indigoteries) and Yves PELISSIER (natural Fibers of Guadeloupe: perspectives of exploitation).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the closing gala of the symposium, took place a fashion show ” Colors of Guadeloupe “, presented by the students of the professional high school Chevalier Saint-Georges who made original works dyed with local dye plants of Guadeloupe.
